Village of Fort Simpson – Community Update Mayor-Leslie Wright

The Mayor and Council of the Village of Fort Simpson would like to provide the following update to all residents regarding the ongoing wildfire situation.

We are pleased to advise that, to date, there has been no loss of homes or occupied structures within the community. While a small number of unoccupied structures have been affected by wildfire, no residential properties have been lost.

Firefighters continue to work tirelessly under extremely challenging conditions. Changing wind directions require crews to continually adjust their strategies, relocate personnel and equipment, and redeploy helicopters and other firefighting resources as conditions evolve. Their dedication and professionalism continue to play a vital role in protecting our community.

The Village also wishes to advise evacuees staying in Yellowknife that Councilor Renlyn Pasqua-Matt is in Yellowknife to assist residents and provide information and support as required.

Although firefighting efforts continue to make progress, the situation remains dynamic, and weather conditions can change rapidly. Access to Fort Simpson remains restricted, and barricades remain in place to prevent unauthorized entry into the community and protect both residents and emergency personnel.

The State of Emergency remains in effect. At this time, residents should not make plans to return to Fort Simpson. The Village will provide clear public notice as soon as it is safe to do so and emergency officials determine that re-entry can begin.

The Mayor and Council thank all firefighters, emergency personnel, volunteers, partnering agencies, and residents for their continued patience, cooperation, and resilience throughout this emergency.

Further updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
