Attention Residents Of Fort Simpson:

This post is to inform residents that during the wind event yesterday, despite fire being pushed into every area from the trailer court to Wildrose, no primary residences were lost. The damage assessment is still underway, and more structures could be lost in the coming days. We will be contacting those effected as the situation progresses.

Structural Protection fire crews worked late into the night, with some going all night, to extinguish spot fires and prevent structure loss from creeping ground fire. Their structural protection equipment, tenacity, and quick thinking prevented the situation from becoming a catastrophe.

As of 9 this morning, the same crews are back out on the line and picking up right where they left off. The wind from the north, while not the low-level jet experienced yesterday, will be persistent and strong. Fire activity is expected to be vigorous and those not part of the operation should avoid the areas where the crews are working.

Fire is now widespread along the eastern side of highway 1 and is expect to push to the airport. Yesterday’s successes are to be celebrated be we not out of the woods yet. Thank you again to everyone working hard for the people of Fort Simpson both in and out of the community.

Masi, Thanks,

-VOFS Incident Command
